Into You by Jay Northcote | Review

into-you-jay-northcoteI adored this body-swapping story by Jay Northcote. Into You is a truly wonderful Young Adult/New Adult book about discovering yourself and coming to terms with who you are.

I follow Jay on social media so when he talked about how personal this book was for him–how much he related to it–I was excited to check it out. There were a few different lines that jumped out at me and really made me hear Jay in this story and made me love this book just a little bit more:

“The thought of spending the rest of his life in someone else’s body was terrifying.”

“‘…life is a damn sight easier when I’m not pretending to be someone else.'”

“The idea of losing himself forever, spending his life stuck in the wrong body, living a lie…it made him feel sick and hopeless.”

Anyone who has ever felt disjointed from their own body can relate to this book and these sentiments. You don’t have to be trans to experience body dysphoria.

I loved the main characters, Olly and Scott. They were both extremely likable and relatable.

Technically, this one is a Young Adult. There are some explicit scenes of masturbation and touching between the characters but without the full-on sexytimes. Just be careful teens you recommend to are mature enough.

Engaging and emotional, Into You completely charmed me. I’d never read a body-swap storyline outside of fanfic, but Jay really hits it out of the park. Can’t recommend enough!

Copy provided, but in no way influenced this review.

What do you do when the body you wake up in isn’t yours?

Olly and Scott promised to be best friends forever. They grew up on the same street, went to the same school, and did everything together. But one hot summer night, teenage experimentation caused hurt feelings and confusion, and their friendship was destroyed.

Four years later they’re both eighteen years old and in their final term at school. Scott is a football star and Olly’s preparing for a main role in the school play. After a heated argument in the street—witnessed by their mysterious, elderly neighbour—they wake up the next morning stuck in each other’s bodies.

With no idea how to get back to normal, they have to co-operate in order to hide their secret. Spending time together rekindles their friendship, yet feelings run deeper for both of them. With the end of school fast approaching, the clock is ticking. Unless they discover how to change back, they could be stuck in the wrong bodies forever.
